What are cookies?

Cookies are data about the user of a website that are stored on the user's computer and their information is retrieved when the user visits the same website.

There are different types of cookies. Depending on who manages them and the computer or domain from which the cookies are sent, as well as how they process the data obtained, we can know or distinguish between them:

Own cookies: Those that are sent to the user's terminal from a computer or domain managed by the website owner and from which the service requested by the user is provided.

Third-party cookies: Those that are sent to the user's terminal from a computer or domain that is not managed by the website owner, but by another party that processes the data obtained through cookies.

In the event that cookies are installed from a computer or domain managed by the website owner itself but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered “own cookies”.

Types of cookies depending on the period of time they remain active:

Depending on the amount of time they remain active we can distinguish between:

Session cookies: Designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are usually used to store information that is only needed to provide the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g. a list of products purchased).

Persistent cookies: The data is still stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie; this can range from a few minutes to several years.

Types of cookies depending on their purpose:

Depending on the purpose with which the data of the cookies is processed, we can distinguish between:

Technical cookies: These allow the user to browse a website, platform, or application and make use of the different options or services available by controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted access areas, remembering the items that comprise an order, carrying out the process of purchasing an order, completing the request for registration or participation in an event, using security elements during navigation, storing content for the dissemination of videos or sound, or sharing content on social media.

Preference or customization cookies: These are cookies that allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics predefined in accordance with a series of criteria in the user's terminal such as the language, the type of browser through which the service is accessed, the regional configuration from which the service is accessed, etc.

Analytics or measuring cookies: These allow the site owner to monitor and analyze the behavior of the users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used in the measurement of the website, application, or platform’s activity and for the creation of browsing profiles for the users of said sites, applications, and platforms, with the goal of introducing improvements based on the analysis of the usage data compiled from the users of the service.

Advertising cookies: These allow for the management, in the most efficient way possible, of the advertising spaces that, if applicable, the site owner has included on the webpage, application, or platform from which the service requested is provided, based on criteria like the edited content and the frequency at which the ads are shown.

Behavioral advertising cookies: These allow for the management, in the most efficient way possible, of the advertising spaces that, if applicable, the website owner has included on the webpage, application, or platform from which the service requested is provided. These cookies store information about user behavior obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows to develop a specific profile with the goal of presenting advertising based thereon.
